Hakkoda Gold Line in Aomori Prefecture is located close to Sukayu Onsen. The Japanese Meteorological Agency calls this the snowiest inhabited place on earth with an average yearly snowfall of 17.6 m.
The gates to Hakkoda Gold Line, a 8.1 km road that connects two Sukayu Onsen and Yachi Onsen, open every year on April 1st. The size of these snow walls is no joke. In some places they can reach up to 12 m. This year, the rain that fell two weeks prior to the opening made the walls shrink to about 7 meters.
